(310) 376-6555 Ext 147    |    kapenacavuto@kingsharbor.org

Kapena grew up in Southern California, living in San Pedro, then Paramount, and then Carson.  He was born and raised into a nominally Catholic home and went to Catholic school up until 6th grade. His early concept of God was basically a combination of a harsh judge and disappointed father. He knew that he had failed to live up to God’s righteous standards, and so he felt a keen sense of guilt and a longing to be better. In addition, Kapena wanted to be able to have assurance that he was forgiven.

During his 6th grade year, Kapena’s family visited a new church.  In the Jr. High class, for the first time, he heard the gospel explained in a way that he could understand it.  Having already recognized his need for reconciliation with God, Kapena immediately responded to this very good news with faith.   From that point on, he has continued to grow in his understanding of God's love for him as demonstrated by God’s incredible grace, and also grow in his love for God in return.  Though he often still struggles with attempting to earn God's favor, fortunately, the gospel continually reminds him of both his need for salvation, and that God has provided it freely in Christ.

Kapena began attending KHC in 2014.  In 2016, he joined the staff as the Life Group Coordinator and now serves as the Director of Small Groups and Discipleship.  Kapena oversees our various small groups and works with the other ministries in the church to make sure we are all working together strategically to make disciples.  He finds his job rewarding as he attempts to practice strategic kingdom thinking and good stewardship by aligning KHC’s ministries to stay focused on our mission to love God, love people, and make disciples.  In addition, he enjoys creating opportunities for spiritual growth, teaching theology, helping people to understand God’s Word and how to read it themselves, working with the awesome KHC staff, and serving alongside his great team of small group leaders.

When not working, Kapena enjoys hanging out with his wife and son (preferably eating great food or going somewhere they have never been), listening to or making music, watching movies, reading books, learning, and going to the gym (especially with his wife).  Kapena lives in Harbor City with his wife, Christy, and their son, Roman.
